If you’ve seen flamingos on lawns at businesses across Northumberland and wondered why, you’re not alone.
If you’ve seen flamingos on lawns at businesses across Northumberland and wondered why, you’re not alone.
That was local real estate agent, Lyndsay Edwards from Royal Lepage and she says she has the opportunity everyday to help her clients find a home they love and feel safe in.
She says the notion that anyone across Canada could feel anything less than protected, is disheartening, so she decided to raise funds for Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre.
According to Cornerstone, on any given night in Canada, close to 6000 women and children stay in an emergency shelter because it is not safe for them to be at home.
Every 6 days in Canada a woman is killed by her current or former partner.
Cornerstone is operating is at a 127% shelter occupancy rate and the shelter is unfortuntely turning away more women and children than ever before, and Edwards is hoping to make a difference.
She says her “for real” goal is $25k but online it still says $10k, which she is halfway to, with a goal to have all money raised by November 11th.
She’s says you don’t have to “flock-it-forward”.
In November, she and her colleagues from across Canada will be trekking 100 km across the Sahara Desert for 5 days in support of the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation.
This journey will not be easy as they will be hiking up to 7 hours a day across difficult terrain in the hot and dry desert climate, with temperatures dropping considerably at night, sleeping in large group tents, using camping-style bathroom facilities, going without electricity or cell service.
80 per cent of the money Edwards raises will go directly to Cornerstone Family Violence Centre, with the balance going back to the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation to fund programs such as Violence Prevention and Teen Healthy Relationship grants.
Executive Director of Cornerstone says that support from people like Edwards is key to their success.
