Lakefront Utilities is having a free public skate March 29th at the Cobourg Community Centre (CCC).
It’s to celebrate the life of Shirley Squirrel, who lost her life on January 23rd when she touched a live wire causing a widespread power outage for residents of Cobourg.
This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder to respect the power and stay back at least three metres from power lines.
A vast percentage of power outages are caused by animal interference, like Shirley’s, and Lakefront says their initial social media post from January 24th (see below) acknowledging the passing of the squirrel received 10,000 views.
Also in the post Lakefront sais that a celebration of life would take place at a later date and that in addition to the skate, information would be available for animal adoption from the Humane Society.
Lakefront adds that they are installing wildlife protection as we upgrade to their transformers. This includes installing transformer bushing guards and insulated electrical supply leads to prevent wildlife from making contact with live electrical components and causing harm to the animal and an interruption to the supply of electricity to their customers.
The free skate will take place at the CCC from 10 to 11 am on Sunday, March 29th.
