The Cobourg Police Service reminds citizens to be vigilant in protecting themselves against phone scams after recent reports.
Recently, residents have been reporting that they received calls from individuals posing as Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) representatives, indicating that they owe money. The callers are aggressive and often claim you can be arrested if the money is not paid immediately. In some cases, the fraudsters use a program to display the telephone number that makes it look like it’s a local number.
If you receive a communication by telephone, mail, text message or email, that claims to be from the CRA requesting personal information such as a social insurance number, credit card number, bank account number, or passport number, hang up, do not click on the links and attachments, and never provide personal information or financial details.
