You many have noticed the “SAVE OUR TREES” signs scattered throughout the Municipality of Port Hope.
If you’re not from Port Hope, you may not know what they are all about.
Well it’s a campaign by residents to save the trees of the Penryn Woodlot (Southwest Corner of Victoria St. S and Strachan St.) from development by Mason Homes.
MPP David Piccini held a Press Conference on Tuesday (Mar 23) regarding the future of the woodlot application at the location, along with some of the members of the “SAVE OUR TREES” group and Mark Cullen, Expert Gardener and Founding Chair of the Highway of Heroes Living Tribute (www.hohtribute.ca).
Cullen says there are other alternatives to building at this location.
Piccini says people choose to live in this area to enjoy what we already have.
Piccini talks to a recent encounter with children and how they highlighted the importance of preserving their land in rural Ontario.
Cullen says this tree lot needs to stay here for everyone to enjoy for years to come.
Phase 5 of the Penryn Homes development has been in a long-term negotiation that’s being put through to LPAT (The Local Planning Appeal Tribunal).
Mason Homes does own the property where Penryn Woods is located and is apparently trying to work with the public to try to resolve this issue.
In a previous interview with Port Hope Mayor Bob Sanderson, he adds that Mason Homes does plan to develop more properties in the municipality and Sanderson adds that housing is needed.
