59 firefighters are pedaling their way to the National Fallen Firefighter Memorial site to mark Firefighters’ National Memorial Day this weekend.
It’s held on the second Sunday of every September, and the riders, led by the Toronto Professional firefighter Celtic society have made the trip for several years now.
This year, Cobourg firefighters will be acknowledging one of their own. Retired Platoon Chief Don King passed away two years ago, and will be memorialized this weekend.
Jeff Briggs, president of the Cobourg Professional Firefighters Association, said it’s great that the ride was able to stop in Cobourg.
Briggs said this year the day is especially important to them.
Their goal is to raise 100 thousand dollars for the Canadian Firefighters Foundation.
The 560 kilometre journey is dedicated to firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
The annual journey has been postponed in the past two years due to the pandemic.
