Sootsoap started as a many great ideas do – from necessity.
Dee Howard had a problem. Her husband is a firefighter and is exposed to smoke and toxins on a regular basis.
Dee told us the inspiration for Sootsoap came one night after her husband came home from work.
Howard said that was her “lightbulb” moment which prompted her investigation into why smoke and other odours could linger even after repeated washing.
Those toxins are one of the reasons firefighters are much more likely to be diagnosed with cancer than the average individual.
For Dee, the issue was now not just combating the smell, but also reducing the risk to her husband, herself and her extended firefighting family.
Sootsoap is all natural, 100% biodegradable and free from chemicals. One of the key ingredients is Binchotan White Charcoal – an incredibly adsorbent charcoal used for over a thousand years in Japan.
Other strong, natural detoxifiers and anti-oxidants with immune boosting properties are used as well that Dee calls the “charcoal & the detox trifecta”. She found they were able to harness amazing plants with intense deodorizing and anti-fungal properties, all without stripping the skin of healthy oils.
In addition to Sootsoap hand soaps and shampoos, Howard has developed a powerful line of personal care products like nothing else on the market.
Dee says they also have a deodorizing spray that can help if you’ve got a hockey player in your life and the ever present odiferous hockey bags and equipment – the spray is so good it’s been used to eliminate the odours from skunk encounters with amazing results.
Howard says their odour spray is a favourite of hockey moms across the country.
Dee is also proud to have been honoured as a Visa Grant winner – an amazing program that supports and recognizes women led and women owned businesses in Canada and the power of diversification.
