Throughout his remarkable life, Bob dedicated himself tirelessly to his passions and the people around him. An ardent sports enthusiast, he immersed himself in the world of athletics, serving as an umpire for baseball, a referee for hockey, and a coach for numerous hockey teams. His voice resonated boldly across the airwaves as he passionately broadcasted games for the Cobourg Cougars, Port Hope Panthers, Lindsay Trent Muskies, and the WHA Birmingham Bulls through CHUC-FM, becoming a familiar presence to fans far and wide.
Former Cobourg Mayor John Henderson had this to say on learning of Bob’s passing.
Yet, Bob’s contributions extended far beyond the realm of sports. He served his community with unwavering commitment, holding various roles within organizations such as the Legion Minor Softball and the Probus Club. His dedication to fundraising knew no bounds, whether it meant dyeing his hair red for the United Way or tirelessly advocating for community projects like Pad 2 and the community lights for Donegan and Legion Fields.
Henderson told us he served 8 consecutive terms on Council.
In his 25 years of service on Cobourg Council, Bob played an integral role in shaping the town’s landscape, from the creation of facilities like Legion Fields to the acquisition of the Northam Industrial Park.
In a release from the Town of Cobourg, current Mayor Lucas Cleveland said, “Mr. Spooner dedicated his life to serving our community and demonstrated the unwavering courage to always do what was right for the majority. As he once said, he voted on decisions for our community with the welfare of all Cobourg residents, not special interest groups, in mind. Mr. Spooner leaves behind a legacy of determination, integrity, and dedication to community.”
His legacy of leadership and vision continues to enrich the lives of Cobourg residents to this day. After many years of dedicated hard work, he was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal and Bob was incredibly honoured by this achievement.
As we bid farewell to a remarkable man, let us remember Bob not only for his achievements but also for the kindness and compassion that defined his character.
A celebration of life in memory of Bob will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home Sunday, April 7, 2024 from 1:00 – 4:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Ed’s House Northumberland Hospice Care Centre or Church on the Hill.
