Cobourg police say a 58-year-old local man has been charged after an investigation into a fire Wednesday morning.
On Friday, April 19, 2024, the Cobourg Police Service issued a release saying an arrest was made in the fire investigation.
On Wednesday, around 6 a.m., emergency crews responded to a report of a fire behind a business on Strathy Road, reported police, who subsequently opened an investigation.
The Cobourg Fire Department extinguished the fire, and there were no injuries reported. Scenes of crime officers also attended and processed the scene.
Police said the fire caused damage to a nearby building and business property.
On Thursday, police had noted in an update they were working to identify a person of interest.
On Friday, police said with the assistance of CCTV surveillance footage, police identified the individual involved.
As a result of an investigation, police said a 58-year-old Cobourg man was arrested and charged with mischief destroys or damages property.
This charge has not been proven in court.
The accused was released with a future court date, said police.
No other details were provided by police.
