The monster Netflix hit “Ginny and Georgia” – which has featured a lot of Cobourg in its previous seasons – is returning to film for its third season locally starting this week.
The Town of Cobourg issued a recent filming notice for the series, confirming prep filming work and filming for the third season occurring starting Tuesday, May 14.
The town said its manager of culture is working closely with production company G2G Series 3 Inc. on local filming efforts.
Cobourg will once again transform temporarily for the show – primarily, the downtown area.
“There will be approximately 120 crew members, 45 background performers and 40 production trucks,” reads the notice. “American flags will replace the Canadian flags flying from Victoria Hall and on King Street West, and Canada Post mailboxes will be covered as American mailboxes on downtown Cobourg sidewalks.”
Filming locations include the El, William Academy, Victoria Park (near the bandshell), and Victoria Hall (exterior shots only.) There will also be travelling shots on roads with intermittent traffic stops, noted the town.
Filming prep is set for Tuesday and Wednesday, while the actual filming is slated for Thursday. Tear down work is set for Friday.
Residents should expect temporary road closures and traffic stoppages on Thursday, including intermittent traffic stoppages on King Street West from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m., and Albert Street from Hibernia to Durham to be closed from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Cobourg police will be working directly with the production company to ensure safety and traffic control, added the town.
Filming production vehicles parking areas will include the Marina and McGill Street lots, and meter parking spaces on Third Street and King Street West (various spaces.)
Parking meters that will be put out of use for filming will be paid for by the production company for all time used, noted the town.
The project is supported by the town and Downtown Business Improvement Area (DBIA), noted officials. Residents with questions or concerns are asked to contact Jackie Chapman Davis with the town at 905-373-7976.
In previous years, production crews and the cast have visited Cobourg several times during filming for the last two seasons. Scenes for the season 1 finale were also shot locally, and Victoria Hall is featured multiple times in the show.
The show has been described as a mother-daughter coming-of-age series featuring stars Antonia Gentry and Brianne Howy.
In the town’s release, it states season 2 had 56 million views by its fifth week after its release in January 2023. The series also spent nearly two months in the global Top 10, reaching 88 countries.
Similarly, previous reports stated some 50 million-plus subscribers watched season 1 in the first 28 days after the 2021 release. Season 1 also made the Top 10 list in more than 80 countries.
