Port Hope council held a special swearing-in ceremony yesterday (June 12, 2024) for their latest member, Darrell Toms.
Out of 1,248 votes cast in Ward 2, Darrell Toms emerged as the winner with 484 votes, narrowly defeating Louise Ferrie-Blecher, who garnered 412 votes. John Bickle received 211 votes, Sarah Turck 127 votes, and Freyja Jorgensen 12 votes. The municipality also reported one spoiled and one declined ballot.
We caught up with Toms at the ceremony and asked him about getting the news he’d been elected.
Toms says he thinks his experience as a business owner will be a benefit in his new role.
The special meeting was convened for the new Ward 2 Councillor who has taken over the seat left vacant by Chris Collins who stepped down in February.
Toms told us he’ll be looking to work on the issues residents brought up leading up to the by-election.
Toms says he’s looking forward to getting started on council and made a point of thanking everyone who came out to vote, saying he’s committed to making a difference for Ward 2.
