As reported back in April, Ontario will permanently raise the speed limit from 100 km/h to 110 km/h on 10 additional sections of provincial highways as of July 12, 2024.
This decision follows a successful pilot program in 2022 and, according to the provincial government, aligns Ontario’s speed limits with those in Alberta, Manitoba, and other provinces.
The new speed limits will apply to highways including sections of Hwy 401, Hwy 403, Hwy 406, Hwy 416, and Hwy 69. These highways were selected based on their capacity to safely accommodate higher speeds.
Sections of highways in our area include the following:
Hwy 401 from Hwy 35/115 to Cobourg (approximately 35 km)
Hwy 401 from Colborne to Belleville (approximately 44 km)
“Most of Ontario’s highways were originally designed for 110 km/h, and our 2022 data supports this increase,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation. “This change is based on evidence and common sense to make driving more convenient for Ontarians.”
Stunt driving penalties will still apply, with penalties starting at 150 km/h or 40 km/h over the posted limit. The increase will cover 860 km of Ontario’s highway network, that the province says will enhance travel efficiency while maintaining safety standards.
