The Cobourg Fire Department has announced the launch of a Home Smoke Alarm Program to improve household safety and preparedness.
Firefighters will visit homes, providing essential information on maintaining functional smoke alarms and creating effective home escape plans. This initiative aims to ensure residents are prepared for potential fire or carbon monoxide emergencies.
Smoke alarms should be installed on every storey and outside all sleeping areas. Ideally, alarms should be mounted on the ceiling, as smoke rises. If ceiling installation is not feasible, place them high on a wall, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Fire Chief Ellard Beaven emphasizes the importance of having a detailed escape plan, with at least two exits per room. He advises selecting a safe, memorable meeting spot outside the home.
Chief Beaven highlights that most fatal fires occur at night when occupants are asleep. He urges families, especially those with young children or mobility issues, to practice their escape plans to ensure everyone knows what to do when alarms sound. “A few minutes of planning can save lives,” he states.
Residents with questions about the Home Smoke Alarm Program are encouraged to contact the Cobourg Fire Department at 905-372-9789.
