A Flood Watch has been issued for the Trent River between Glen Ross and Frankford by Lower Trent Conservation due to ice jams and rising water levels.
This advisory, in effect until Thursday, January 16 at noon, warns of potential minor flooding in low-lying areas, including roads, basements, and backyards.
The accumulation of frazil ice has led to localized water level increases, prompting the Trent-Severn Waterway to adjust water control structures in an effort to moderate conditions. These operations may cause fluctuating water levels.
Residents along the river are urged to monitor water levels, ensure sump pumps are functional, and secure property such as boats and docks. Extreme cold temperatures may freeze floodwaters, creating hazardous conditions.
Lower Trent Conservation advises parents and caregivers to keep children and pets away from waterways, as currents can be strong and ice may break unexpectedly. Areas near dams, culverts, and bridges should be avoided entirely.
