Cobourg residents are feeling some relieve after a duplex on John Street was boarded up following repeated police investigations.
The duplex was boarded up on February 6, 2025, following years of police activity. The home at 351/353 John Street had been the subject of multiple emergency calls and drug-related search warrants, including a recent Controlled Drugs and Substances Act search warrant executed by Cobourg Police Service Criminal Investigations Bureau (CIB), with the assistance of the Port Hope Police CIB, Ontario Provincial Police Tactical Response Unit (TRU) and Emergency Response Team (ERT), Belleville Police K9, uniform officers and Special Constables.
On Thursday morning, municipal by-law officers, police, and a representative from Northumberland County were on scene as residents packed up and vacated the property.
Cobourg CAO Tracey Vaughan tells us more.
According to Vaughan, the owner voluntarily boarded up the property due to ongoing issues.
Workers spent the morning securing the windows and doors, while nearby residents looked on.
Vaughan tells us the closure was supervised by town and county officials to ensure a smooth and safe closure as tenants vacated.
Vaughan says the owner decided to board up the duplex due to persistent issues including last week’s drug seizure with an estimated street value of nearly a quarter of a million dollars.
