UPDATE: 9:40 a.m. Northumberland OPP says the tractor-trailer has been removed from the highway, and the highway is anticipated to reopen soon after the road has been cleared.
Northumberland OPP says Hwy. 401 westbound is closed at Gully Road in the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand due to a collision involving a tractor-trailer.
According to initial OPP reports, a fire truck that was also in the area early Sunday morning for a separate earlier collision “sustained damage as a result” of the crash involving the tractor-trailer.
OPP said no first-responders were injured; however, the tractor-trailer driver was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Diversions are in place at Lyle Street. No other details have been released/confirmed.
OPP said updates will be provided when available.
A winter storm warning remains in effect for the region, with officials urging people to postpone all non-essential travel.
Environment Canada has been calling for snowfall accumulations of 20 to 30 centimetres Sunday, with peak snowfall rates of three to six cm per hour.
The heaviest snow is expected to continue this morning and afternoon.
“Conditions will rapidly deteriorate this morning as a more significant area of snow and blowing snow arrives. Travel will be hazardous and is not recommended,” reads Environment Canada’s alert.
Along with rapidly accumulating snow making travel difficult, visibility is expected to be reduced to near zero at times.
