Northumberland-Peterborough South MPP David Piccini is returning to his role as Ontario’s minister of labour, immigration, training and skills development following Premier Doug Ford’s latest cabinet announcement.
Ford announced his updated cabinet Wednesday, emphasizing the government’s focus on protecting Ontario’s economy amid rising trade tensions with the United States.
Premier Ford didn’t mince words when it comes to the threat of U.S. tariffs.
Piccini’s return to the labour portfolio comes as the province aims to strengthen its workforce by investing in skills training and creating opportunities for better-paying jobs.
Ford said the new cabinet will “double down” on efforts to reskill workers, remove trade barriers and attract new investments.
Piccini previously held the labour minister role and was recognized for his efforts to expand job training programs and support apprenticeships. His reappointment highlights the government’s focus on building a competitive and resilient workforce.
In addressing U.S. tariffs, Ford quoted former U.S. President Ronald Regan, who he says understood the “unmistakable value of free trade.”
Other key changes in Ford’s cabinet include Greg Rickford’s new role as minister of Indigenous affairs and First Nations economic reconciliation, along with responsibility for developing the Ring of Fire’s critical mineral resources. Sylvia Jones remains deputy premier and minister of health, while Peter Bethlenfalvy continues as finance minister.
Ford said his team is committed to protecting Ontario’s economy, especially in light of U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to impose higher tariffs on Canadian exports.
Piccini’s reappointment keeps a familiar face in charge of labour policy as the province navigates economic challenges.
