Work on the Town of Cobourg’s waterfront boardwalk replacement project will resume the week of March 24, with Town staff continuing efforts to improve the popular lakeside pathway.
The boardwalk, which was originally constructed nearly 20 years ago, spans from Ontario Street to Hibernia Street and includes connections to Bagot and Durham Streets. Following public consultation, Cobourg Council approved a new design in 2023 that will feature pressure-treated wood decking and a recycled plastic composite substructure. The updated boardwalk will be wider, expanding to 12 feet, and will be built at ground level to improve accessibility in alignment with recommendations from the Town of Cobourg Accessibility Advisory Committee.
To reduce costs, Town staff are constructing the new boardwalk in sections at the Public Works yard before moving the pieces to the waterfront for installation. In preparation for this next phase, crews will soon mark out the boardwalk’s alignment, clear remaining vegetation and level the area before installation begins.
As part of the design process, an environmental impact assessment was completed to protect native vegetation. Under the supervision of Beacon Environmental, native plants were carefully relocated in fall 2023 just outside the construction zone to ensure their preservation.
The Town will notify residents once the new boardwalk is open to the public.
