Central Region OPP is calling on non-local residents to avoid areas hit hardest by this weekend’s ice storm, which includes Northumberland.
In an update Wednesday, April 2 from OPP on its ongoing response to the severe weather event, police put out the call, noting that several areas are experiencing shortages of essential supplies such as fuel, food and other necessities.
The regions cited by OPP as most affected include Northumberland, Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, Orillia, Bracebridge, Huntsville, and Haliburton.
Locally, more bad weather is also supposed to be on the way, which could add to struggles amid ongoing cleanup and restoration efforts.
A non-local visitor is defined as anyone traveling to these areas who does not reside there permanently or is not part of the local community, explained OPP, adding that this includes tourists, temporary workers, and individuals from outside the region.
The ice storm has caused considerable damage – including locally – to trees, power lines and infrastructure, further exacerbated by high winds through night into Monday, reiterated police.
To ensure local communities have access to resources needed during this challenging time, OPP is asking non-local visitors to delay trips to affected areas until conditions improve.
“We sincerely appreciate your understanding and co-operation,” said OPP. “The safety and well-being of all residents and visitors is our top priority, and we look forward to welcoming you back once conditions stabilize.”
