More than 40 firefighters from Port Hope and neighbouring departments responded to a major industrial fire on April 9, 2025, at a chemical facility on Rose Glen Road.
The fire, which broke out in the afternoon, posed a high risk to public safety and required the full deployment of all three fire stations in the Municipality of Port Hope. Fourteen firefighting apparatus were used to contain and suppress the blaze before it could escalate further.
“These past weeks have tested our community, with the ice storm and now this fire.,” said Mayor Olena Hankivsky in a statement. “Through both events, our Fire Chief and firefighters have demonstrated professionalism, skill, and care. Their dedication has been crucial in ensuring the safety of our residents and mitigating risks to our community.”
The Cobourg Fire Department provided assistance on-site with its aerial truck and also covered Port Hope’s Fire Station 1. Hamilton Township firefighters provided backup for Stations 2 and 3, while the Alnwick/Haldimand Fire Department brought in the County Air Trailer to assist with air bottle refills.
Additional support came from Cameco Corporation, which provided drone surveillance and a hazardous materials team. The Ontario Ministry of the Environment, the Spills Action Centre, and GFL Contractors also responded to assist with environmental remediation.
No injuries were reported, and the fire was successfully brought under control after nearly 8 hours.
The full cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
