The Town of Cobourg has announced that demolition of the structure at 414 King Street West will soon take place, as part of a larger plan to expand and improve Wastewater Pollution Control Plant No. 1 (WPCP#1).
The site, located adjacent to the existing wastewater plant at 420 King Street West, was purchased by the Town at the direction of Council to support future infrastructure upgrades. Officials say the current access to the plant is shared with a neighbouring property and runs along a narrow, three-metre-wide strip of land – too small for heavy hauling vehicles required for plant operations.
According to the town, a proper industrial-grade driveway is essential for long-term functionality and this work is part of ensuring the wastewater facility can handle future growth and demand.
The area is located within the Cobourg Creek floodplain and regulated by the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority, limiting its potential for any future residential or commercial use. Instead, the property will serve to facilitate the expansion of WPCP#1.
An Environmental Assessment is already underway and will take up to 18 months to complete. The new driveway is expected to be constructed in 2026, alongside scheduled upgrades to King Street West.
