Voters across the nation are heading to the polls today – Monday, April 28, 2025 – for Canada’s 45th general election.
Here’s a quick recap for Northumberland-Clarke and Bay of Quinte.
VOTING ON ELECTION DAY?
Locally, polls open at 9:30 a.m. and close at 9:30 p.m.
According to Elections Canada, voting hours are being staggered today in an effort to ensure the majority of the results are available at roughly the same time across the nation.
WHAT ID DO I NEED TO VOTE?
Elections Canada lays out three options for voting and proving your identity and address.
Option 1: Show your driver’s licence and/or any other card government-issued identification with a photo, name and current address.
Option 2: Show two pieces of identification – both must have your name and at least one contains your current address. For example, bring a voter information card and bank statement or utility bill and student ID card.
Elections Canada has a full rundown on accepted ID forms if pursuing this option.
Option 3: If you don’t have identification, you can still vote. You have to declare your identity and address in writing and have someone who knows you – and who is assigned to your polling station – vouch for you, explains Elections Canada.
This means the person vouching must be able to prove their identity and address.
An individual vouching for another can only do so for one person (except in long-term care facilities.)
WHAT IF I DIDN’T GET MY VOTER CARD?
Bring your voter information cards if you got one in the mail – but don’t sweat if you didn’t.
People who aren’t registered can still vote at their polling station and register just before casting their ballots.
To find your polling station, people can enter their postal codes online or call 1-800-463-6868.
Unregistered electors can also enter information online, print a pre-filled registration certificate and bring it on election day for faster service at the polls, says Elections Canada.
To register and vote, people must prove their identity and address. (As outlined above, more information on ways to do this is accessible online.)
To recap, you must be registered to vote and to register, you have to be a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years old and must prove your identity and address.
