The Town of Cobourg is inviting the public to its greenhouse open house on Saturday, May 10.
The event is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 501 Thompson St. The free event offers a behind-the-scenes look at how Cobourg’s gardens bloom each spring.
Guided tours will be led by Rick Cromlish, the town’s horticulturist, and the parks department team. Visitors will see how staff seed and transplant thousands of annuals and perennials destined for Cobourg’s public flower beds, planters and hanging baskets.
“This is a great opportunity for residents to see how much care and planning goes into making our town beautiful,” said Cromlish.
The open house will also feature historic photo albums showcasing past designs of Cobourg’s iconic floral clock, along with complimentary refreshments and a free barbecue lunch sponsored by Experience Cobourg. The barbecue runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
A Mother’s Day-themed giveaway will be available while supplies last and staff note that the event is suitable for all ages and makes for a great day out for families, gardeners and flower lovers alike.
The community services division reminds residents that while they’re welcome to tour and enjoy the greenhouse, the plants grown there are intended for municipal gardens only and are not for sale.
The open house offers a colourful glimpse into the preparation that goes into Cobourg’s seasonal displays and a chance to meet the green thumbs behind them.
