Two Cobourg residents were charged with impaired driving during separate traffic stops early Saturday morning, according to the Cobourg Police Service.
The first incident occurred around 1:00 a.m. on May 10, 2025, when officers on general patrol saw a vehicle fail to stop at a stop sign near King Street West and Burnham Avenue. A traffic stop was initiated, and police say the 30-year-old male driver showed signs of alcohol consumption and failed a roadside screening device test. He was arrested and charged with operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration over 80, and disobeying a stop sign. His vehicle was impounded and his driver’s licence suspended. He was released on an undertaking with a future court date and issued a part III summons.
Roughly two hours later, at around 3:00 a.m., officers stopped another vehicle travelling westbound on King Street after noticing the driver using a cellphone. Police say the vehicle crossed the centre line and mounted the curb before stopping. The 38-year-old female driver also failed a roadside screening device test. She was charged with impaired operation over 80 and using a handheld device.
Cobourg Police are reminding residents that impaired driving is the leading criminal cause of death and injury in Canada. They encourage the public to call 911 to report suspected impaired drivers.
