Quinte West OPP say a 14-year-old from Oshawa has been charged after emergency crews responded to a report of a fully engulfed vehicle on Hwy. 401 on Thursday, May 15, 2025.
Police issued an update on Friday, May 16 confirming charges.
As previously reported, first-responders answered the call for a fully involved car fire just after 7 a.m. Thursday on the eastbound shoulder of the highway near mile marker 517.
“There were no individuals in the vehicle or at the scene,” said OPP, adding that subsequent investigation allegedly revealed the vehicle was stolen earlier from the Durham area.
On Friday, police said as a result of the investigation, a 14-year-old from Oshawa was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, failure to comply with a release order – other than to attend court, failure to comply with an undertaking, two counts of failure to comply with probation, and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.
The name of the accused cannot be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, added police.
No other details were provided by police.
