Police are urging residents to be alert after a distraction theft left a local senior out over $1,000.
The Cobourg Police Service says a 73-year-old woman had her wallet stolen while using the self-checkout at a grocery store. According to the report, three individuals worked together to distract the woman and take her wallet. Her bank card was then used to make around $500 in purchases and withdraw another $500 from her account.
The theft is under investigation, and no arrests have been made.
Police say distraction thefts often involve teams of thieves working together. They may distract victims in stores, at self-checkouts, or in parking lots. Victims may not realise something is missing until much later.
The Cobourg Police Service is reminding the public to take steps to help prevent thefts like this. That includes staying aware of your surroundings, keeping purses or wallets secured, and never leaving personal items unattended. Police also advise caution if someone offers help or stands too close.
Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity. If a theft is in progress or the suspect is still nearby, police say you should call 9-1-1 immediately.
Police say extra caution can go a long way in protecting yourself and your belongings while out shopping.
