Construction begins July 21 on long-awaited safety improvements to the Welcome intersection in Port Hope.
Northumberland County has announced a full slate of upgrades for the intersection of County Roads 2, 10, and 74, a busy corridor just north of Highway 401 known for its confusing layout and safety concerns.
The project follows a detailed study that included traffic analysis and community feedback. While the existing three-way stop configuration will remain, the design will be upgraded to improve visibility and driver understanding.
Improvements include lane realignments, slope adjustments for better sightlines, and new turn lanes. Pedestrians will benefit from three new crossings, two with flashing beacons, as well as new sidewalks and asphalt boulevards. The County is also adding improved signage, pavement markings, overhead flashing beacons, and upgraded street lighting throughout the intersection.
Construction is expected to continue through to the end of October. County officials say there will be no full road closures, and traffic will alternate between one and two lanes as work progresses. In the event of a Highway 401 incident, the detour route through the intersection will remain accessible.
The County thanks residents for their input and patience and says these upgrades will improve long-term safety and accessibility for everyone using the intersection.
