A full open-air burn ban is now in effect across all municipalities in Northumberland County, effective August 6, 2025.
The Northumberland County Fire Chiefs Association says the ban is necessary due to extremely dry conditions and worsening air quality caused by ongoing wildland fires in Ontario and Manitoba. The decision was announced by Association President Mike Robinson and has been coordinated across fire services throughout the region.
Until further notice, all forms of open-air burning are strictly prohibited in Northumberland County. This includes backyard campfires, brush and yard waste burning, agricultural burns, fireworks, and any fire not contained within a CSA-approved appliance (where permitted). The restrictions apply to both rural and urban areas.
Residents who fail to comply could face fines or charges under municipal by-laws and the Ontario Fire Code. Fire departments are also suspending all current burn permits and will not issue new ones during the ban.
Meanwhile, the City of Quinte West has issued a partial burn ban. Under their restrictions, only small campfires are allowed, and residents are urged to use extreme caution.
Northumberland residents are asked to remain vigilant and report any signs of fire immediately. Fire officials say they will continue to monitor conditions closely and will lift the ban when it is safe to do so.
For the latest information and updates, residents are encouraged to visit their municipal websites or contact their local fire department.
