Cobourg’s Michael Coggins is asking for his community’s support as he competes for a national title and a $25,000 prize.
The 17-year-old professional kart racer has reached the quarter finals of the Youth Athlete of the Year competition, an online contest run by Colossal.org with Sports Illustrated to highlight promising athletes and raise money for the V Foundation for Cancer Research and the Why Not You Foundation.
“This brings big stuff for me if I win – travel races and the next step in my career,” said Coggins. “It’s a big opportunity for me and I’m super glad I made it into the quarter finals.”
He’s been racing professionally for three years and says karting has shaped his ambitions.
Michael’s father Gord believes the award would give his son a higher profile in the sport.
He added that Michael is known for helping others.
Residents can lend their support by casting a free vote once every 24 hours or vote by donation to support the charities involved.
The young racer is hoping you can take a moment to help.
More information and voting details are at AthleteOfTheYear.org/2025/Michael-0981.
