Cobourg Police Service say they’ve charged a 33-year-old local man with theft and driving-related offences following an incident on Elgin Street East on September 14, 2025.
Police say they received a call about a theft from a business after a man allegedly left without paying for merchandise. When confronted by an employee, the suspect attempted to flee in his vehicle, striking a parked car and nearly hitting the employee before leaving the parking lot at a dangerous speed.
According to police, the investigating officer later observed the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The driver was identified as the same individual involved in the theft.
As a result of the investigation, the 33-year-old Cobourg man has been charged with theft under $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, failure to stop after an accident, and dangerous operation.
Police say the man was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
