Cobourg Collegiate Institute was briefly evacuated this morning following a reported gas leak in the school cafeteria.
According to the Town of Cobourg, the incident was caused by a stove with a pilot light that had gone out, resulting in a minor gas leak. Cobourg Fire Department crews arrived on scene, confirmed the presence of gas inside the building, and immediately ventilated the school to ensure safety. Enbridge Gas was called to assist and was able to identify the affected stove and isolate it from service.
The evacuation was precautionary and students, staff, and visitors were asked to leave the building while the response took place. Once the building was ventilated and cleared, the school was declared safe to reopen and regular classes resumed later in the morning.
Officials confirmed there were no injuries or further hazards related to the incident.
The Town and the Cobourg Fire Department thanked the school community for its cooperation and quick action, which helped ensure everyone’s safety.
