Halloween can be a fun and exciting time for children, but it also comes with safety challenges, such as busy streets and distracted drivers and navigating dark neighborhoods.
Parents often worry about keeping their kids visible, supervised and away from potential hazards, while police play a key role in ensuring a safe environment through patrols, community guidance and public reminders about safe trick-or-treating practices.
OPP is reminding everyone about some basic tips to stay safe this Halloween as kids head out prowling for treats.
OPP’s Bill Dickson said drivers must be especially cautious during the evening as excited children may not pay attention while crossing streets.
Parents are also encouraged to prepare their children with safe costumes and supervision. With rain in the forecast, Dickson said to think about waterproofing costumes and consider makeup instead of masks that might limit vision. And make sure kids don’t eat candy until they get home.
OPP will have patrols out on Halloween night but stressed they cannot be everywhere but they could be anywhere.
He also reminded kids to carry flashlights or wear reflective items and cross streets safely while having fun.
