Cobourg police are warning residents to stay alert following two distraction thefts targeting older adults this month in local parking lots.
Police say organized crime groups are using distraction techniques-often asking for directions-to steal jewelry, most commonly necklaces. In some cases, a suspect may place a piece of jewelry on a victim as a diversion while discreetly removing an item the person is already wearing. The theft usually goes unnoticed until the suspects have fled.
Investigators say suspects often use high-end SUVs for these thefts because their height allows easy interaction with standing individuals. While incidents in Cobourg have occurred in parking lots, similar thefts in other jurisdictions have taken place near homes, in driveways, and outside grocery stores.
Police are urging the public to be cautious around unfamiliar vehicles or people who approach them unexpectedly, especially if someone offers to help or asks for directions. They are also advising residents to maintain a safe distance if anyone attempts to give them an item or engages in distracting conversation.
Cobourg police say they are working with neighbouring police services to track and identify organized crime groups believed to be behind these thefts. Through intelligence sharing and coordinated enforcement, police aim to disrupt the networks responsible and prevent further incidents.
Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity immediately and remain aware of their surroundings while out in public.
