The Cobourg Police Service says it’s stepping up patrols and community outreach after a sharp rise in thefts from vehicles across the community.
Police say 21 incidents were reported in October, compared to just four in September. In response, officers have increased overnight patrols in affected neighbourhoods and deployed the Auxiliary Unit through the Post Incident Neighbourhood Engagement (PINE) program to connect directly with residents.
As part of a recent “Lock It or Lose It” campaign, officers inspected 43 vehicles in a west-end neighbourhood-finding that 18 had unlocked doors, open windows, or visible valuables. Police also spoke with 21 residents, offering on-the-spot safety tips and home security assessments through the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) program.
Residents are urged to lock vehicles, remove valuables, and improve lighting around their homes to deter theft. Police also encourage homeowners to book a free CPTED audit by contacting info@cobourgpolice.com.
Cobourg police say the proactive campaign aims to both reduce theft and build community awareness before the busy holiday season.
