Cobourg police say they are urging the public to take precautions after receiving a report of a distraction theft involving a 66-year-old woman whose wallet was stolen while shopping at a local grocery store.
Shortly after the theft, one thousand dollars was withdrawn from the victim’s bank account, and the investigation remains underway.
Police say distraction thieves often work in teams and rely on creating diversions to draw a victim’s attention away from their personal belongings. They may initiate casual conversation, ask for assistance or intentionally invade personal space. Incidents like this frequently occur inside stores, at checkout areas or in parking lots, and many victims do not notice anything is missing until later.
Cobourg Police are recommending residents take preventative steps such as keeping wallets and purses secured, maintaining awareness of surroundings, and ensuring personal possessions are never left unattended, even for a moment. They also advise locking vehicle doors and being mindful of individuals standing unusually close.
Police say suspicious activity should always be reported.
If a suspect is still visible, people should call 9-1-1 immediately, otherwise incidents can be reported through Cobourg police non-emergency channels as investigators continue efforts to identify those responsible.
