Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that Mark Wiseman will become Canada’s next Ambassador to the United States, effective February 15, 2026, upon presentation of his credentials.
Wiseman brings more than 30 years of experience in law, business, and finance. His leadership roles include President and CEO of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Chair of the Alberta Investment Management Corporation. He also serves on the Prime Minister’s Council on Canada-U.S. Relations and has extensive knowledge of both countries’ economies, financial markets, and institutions.
Carney says Wiseman’s experience, contacts, and commitment come at a crucial time in Canada-U.S. relations. Wiseman will advance key priorities including secure borders, stronger trade and investment ties, and cooperation on shared global challenges.
Wiseman succeeds Ambassador Kirsten Hillman, who was praised for defending Canadian interests, promoting a stable trade relationship, and supporting Canadian workers.
The appointment comes as Canada prepares for the first joint review of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement, or CUSMA, which began in 2020 for a 16-year term. The review, scheduled for July 2026, will evaluate the agreement’s effectiveness and consider a possible extension. CUSMA currently allows more than 85 per cent of Canada-U.S. trade to move tariff-free, amounting to over $3.5 billion in goods and services crossing the border daily.
Public consultations with Canadian workers and businesses are ongoing to inform this review. Wiseman’s appointment is expected to support these efforts and help advance Canada’s economic, trade, and diplomatic priorities while strengthening bilateral cooperation.
