Eligible low-income workers across Canada will begin receiving Advanced Canada Workers Benefit (ACWB) payments this month as part of efforts to provide more timely financial support through the federal Canada Workers Benefit (CWB) program.
The ACWB is an advance payment mechanism tied to the CWB – a refundable tax credit designed to supplement the incomes of working Canadians with modest earnings. Rather than waiting until after filing annual taxes to receive their full benefit, eligible individuals and families can get up to 50% of their total CWB amount early in the year, spread out over three instalments.
The advance payments are calculated automatically by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) when recipients file their income tax and benefit return and establish eligibility for the CWB. No separate application is required. To qualify, Canadians must meet certain criteria related to income, residency and age, and their eligibility is assessed based on their most recent tax return.
Advance instalments generally arrive on or around scheduled dates in January, July and October, giving workers predictable support across the year without having to wait for a single annual payment. Recipients can view their scheduled payment amounts and dates through the CRA’s My Account online service.
The benefit includes two parts – a basic amount for eligible workers and a disability supplement for those who qualify, both of which increase overall payable support. By issuing part of the benefit early, the ACWB provides timely help for working Canadians as they manage everyday expenses such as rent, groceries and transportation.
