Operation Red Nose is celebrating a decade of promoting road safety in Northumberland County as its 2025 holiday campaign comes to a close.
Locally delivered by YMCA Northumberland, the program has been providing safe rides home during the festive season for the past 10 years. Over that time, more than 4,300 residents have been driven home safely, covering more than 50,000 kilometres on local roads. Organizers say the service has become a trusted option for residents looking to make responsible choices during holiday celebrations.
This year’s Northumberland campaign was supported by more than 60 volunteers, many of whom returned for multiple nights to help ensure the service ran smoothly. The program also raised more than $20,000, with funds staying in the community to support YMCA Northumberland’s Strong Communities Campaign and improve access to local programs and services.
Operation Red Nose operates nationally as a volunteer-based road safety initiative, encouraging responsible behaviour and offering an alternative to impaired driving. During the 2025 campaign, the program operated in 60 communities across Canada, with thousands of volunteers providing safe rides over the holiday season.
In Northumberland, organizers credit the program’s longevity to strong community involvement, including volunteers, sponsors, local businesses, and partner organizations that provide financial and in-kind support. Local restaurants and businesses also contributed by supplying meals and refreshments to volunteers throughout the campaign.
As the program reflects on 10 seasons in Northumberland County, YMCA Northumberland says Operation Red Nose continues to demonstrate how community-led efforts can play a meaningful role in improving road safety and supporting neighbours during the busiest time of year.
