Tributes are continuing to pour in following the sudden passing of Jeff Lees, a former councillor who served the Municipality of Port Hope for 25 years.
Lees was first elected to council in the late 1990s and went on to serve alongside four mayors, five chief administrative officers and seven different councils. During his tenure, he also held the role of deputy mayor and was widely regarded as a steady and thoughtful presence at the council table.
Mayor Olena Hankivsky described Lees as a lifelong resident who took immense pride in Port Hope and consistently placed the well being of residents at the forefront of his work. Former mayor Bob Sanderson echoed that sentiment, saying Lees never sought attention and focused instead on balanced decision making and what was best for the community.
Beyond municipal politics, Lees was deeply involved in volunteerism across Port Hope for more than three decades. His contributions included work with the Port Hope Kinsmen, Float Your Fanny Down the Ganny committee, Critical Mass Art, the Heritage Business Improvement Area, the Port Hope Fair, the Santa Claus Parade, the Highway of Heroes Ride, the Lions Club, Big Brothers, and Canada Day fireworks. He was also a dedicated supporter of local sports, particularly the Port Hope Panthers.
In recognition of his extensive service, Lees received the municipality’s Outstanding Citizen Civic Award in 2022.
The Municipality of Port Hope has lowered flags at Town Hall to half mast in his honour. Municipal officials say Lees’ legacy of commitment, integrity and care for the community will not be forgotten.
Thoughts have been extended to his wife Laurie, his son Garnet, and their family and friends.
Family and friends will be received on Saturday January 17, 2026 at Rushnell Funeral Home, 103 Mill Street North, Port Hope from 12-2pm. Memorial Service to follow at 2pm.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to Northumberland Hills Hospital would be appreciated.
