Half load restrictions will come into effect on rural municipal roads in Port Hope on Sunday as part of seasonal efforts to protect infrastructure during the spring thaw.
The Municipality of Port Hope says weight limits of five tonnes per axle apply to all rural roads from March 1 through April 30, 2026. During the spring thaw, road bases become saturated and soft due to freeze thaw conditions, making them more susceptible to damage from heavy vehicles.
Municipal officials say fully loaded trucks, regardless of the number of axles, can cause significant wear and structural damage to rural roads at this time of year. The temporary restrictions are intended to reduce costly repairs and extend the life of the road network.
The timeline for the restrictions may be adjusted depending on weather and road conditions.
Drivers are also reminded to check with Northumberland County for any half load or weight restrictions that may apply to county roads within the Municipality.
