Cobourg police say they are investigating after a reported firearm incident was determined to be a case of swatting.
Police say officers responded to a residence on William Street around 7:30 p.m. on March 31 following a report of a dispute involving a handgun and a shot fired.
While officers were responding, additional information suggested a suspect had fled the area in a vehicle. Police located a vehicle matching the description and conducted a high risk stop in the area of Elgin Street West and Ontario Street.
All occupants were detained and searched, but police say no firearm was found. Following further investigation, officers determined the reported incident did not occur.
Police say the situation appears to be a swatting incident. Swatting is a criminal act in which false or misleading information is provided to police to trigger a large emergency response, often to a home or business.
Officials say these calls can divert critical police resources away from real emergencies and create unnecessary risk for both officers and the public.
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Cobourg Police Service or Crime Stoppers.
