A new virtual reality platform developed in Northumberland County is entering a pilot phase aimed at transforming how manufacturers recruit and retain workers.
The Vfactory platform, developed by Nventure in partnership with the Northumberland Manufacturers’ Association, is designed to give job seekers a realistic preview of manufacturing work before they are hired.
Using immersive simulations, the system recreates real workplace conditions, including production pace, noise levels, repetitive tasks, and safety protocols. The goal is to help potential employees better understand job expectations and reduce early turnover, which developers say remains a persistent challenge in the sector.
The platform has now moved from development into a 12 month pilot phase, with the Northumberland Manufacturers’ Association leading implementation, outreach, and training delivery. The pilot will focus on integrating the technology into real hiring and onboarding processes across local manufacturing environments.
Three core simulations have been developed, including a heavy industrial production line, a robotic line, and a health and safety training module. A youth focused version has also been introduced to help engage students and introduce career opportunities in manufacturing through an interactive format.
The initiative has received support through Ontario’s Skills Development Fund and has already been tested with manufacturers, schools, and post secondary institutions in the region.
Organizers say the focus during the pilot phase will be on real world adoption and measuring how the platform can improve hiring outcomes, workforce readiness, and long term retention in the manufacturing sector.
