The Municipality of Port Hope is inviting residents to share their thoughts on proposed changes to its parking by-law, aimed at addressing ongoing concerns around winter street parking.
Municipal officials say on-street parking during snow clearing operations continues to create challenges, including blocked routes for plows, safety concerns for pedestrians and drivers, and delays for emergency vehicles. Snow buildup caused by parked vehicles has also been identified as a recurring issue for residents.
To address these concerns, the municipality is proposing several changes to its Traffic and Parking By-law. Among them is a ban on overnight street parking between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. from December 1 to March 31.
The draft by-law also includes a general 12-hour limit on street parking, unless otherwise posted, and proposes a free resident parking permit for those who do not have access to a driveway. Officials say the permit system is intended to maintain fairness while addressing accessibility needs.
Residents are encouraged to participate in the consultation process through a series of in-person engagement sessions. Upcoming sessions will be held April 14 at the Jack Burger Sports Complex, April 20 at the Canton Community Hub, and April 28 at Town Hall.
For those unable to attend, the municipality says the draft by-law and an online feedback form are available through its engagement website.
Feedback gathered during the consultation period will help inform any final changes to the by-law.
