Northumberland County council has reaffirmed its support for the north corridor option in the proposed Alto high-speed rail project, while also approving changes to councillor remuneration that will take effect in the next term of council.
Council supports the north corridor but opposes the southern option.
Warden Bob Crate lists the reasons in the motion.
In addition, council notes strengthening current corridors should be part of the solution.
Council’s motion also called for a copy of the staff report to be submitted to the Alto consultation process.
At the same meeting, council approved updates to remuneration for the 2026 to 2030 term, including a $2,500 annual health care spending account for members.
The measure was passed following a recorded vote, reflecting a divided council on the issue.
County coucillor Olena Hankivsky was among those who voted in favour as the motion which passed in a recorded 15-11 vote.
The broader remuneration changes also include updated per diem rates for conferences, consideration of caregiving-related expenses, and direction for staff to prepare a by-law enabling participation in the OMERS pension plan, along with alternative options.
