The Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board recognized school volunteers across the region during its regular board meeting this week as part of National Volunteer Week, while also sharing best wishes to retiring Associate Director of Education Drew McNaughton.
Trustees presented Accolade awards to volunteers from schools across the district, including several in Northumberland County, recognizing their contributions to student success and school life.
The board says more than 2,000 volunteers support KPR schools each year through student nutrition programs, school councils, classroom activities, extra-curricular programs, tutoring, fundraising, and community events.
Board Chair Paul Brown said volunteers help create memorable opportunities for students each day, from providing nutritious meals to supporting literacy and organizing events that build belonging in school communities.
Director of Education Rita Russo said volunteers enhance educational experiences and inspire students to excel in learning, succeed in life, and enrich communities.
Among those recognized were volunteers from schools in Cobourg, Campbellford, Hastings, Colborne, Grafton, Roseneath, and surrounding communities.
Trustees also accepted, with regret, the retirement notice of Associate Director of Education Drew McNaughton, effective this August.
McNaughton joined the board in 2021 and has led teaching and learning initiatives, school and system improvement, and oversight of the Norwood District High School family of schools.
Board officials praised his leadership and commitment to student success, saying his professional knowledge and dedication have been tremendous assets to students and staff across the district.
McNaughton said it has been his great fortune to work with so many wonderful people and serve the students and families of Kawartha Pine Ridge.
