Cobourg’s Corporate, Finance and Legislative Standing Committee has approved more than 37 thousand dollars in proposed municipal community grant funding for local organizations, with final approval still required from council later this month.
The Town’s annual grants program supports non profit and community based organizations offering programs, services, projects and events aimed at improving quality of life in Cobourg.
Approved recommendations include 10 thousand dollars for The Rose Quest Personal Care Initiative, 5 thousand dollars each for Sounds of the Next Generation, Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Durham and Northumberland, and The Children’s Safety Village.
Additional funding recommendations include Community Care Northumberland, La Jeunesse Choirs, the Northumberland Humane Society, the Royal Canadian Air Cadets and the Northumberland Oral Health Coalition, along with several in kind contributions such as parking passes and facility rentals.
According to the staff report, the Town budgeted 40 thousand dollars for community grants this year, though 10 thousand dollars is already committed to the food bank through an existing agreement.
Staff noted that eligible applications exceeded available funding, while nearly 70 thousand dollars in cash grant requests were submitted overall.
The report also outlined several applications deemed ineligible under the Town’s grants policy because of missing financial documents, governance requirements or requests tied to capital projects.
Final approval is expected during Cobourg council’s regular meeting May 27.
