Cobourg’s 2026 municipal election is beginning to take shape with several current members of council officially entering races while others have yet to formally declare their intentions.
According to the Town’s unofficial list of candidates, Deputy Mayor Nicole Beatty will run for mayor in the October election.
Mayor Lucas Cleveland has not yet officially filed nomination papers, though he has publicly stated he intends to seek re election.
The deputy mayor race is also beginning to develop, with current Councillor Adam Bureau filing nomination papers for the position on Monday.
Cobourg’s current council includes Mayor Lucas Cleveland, Deputy Mayor Nicole Beatty, and councillors Adam Bureau, Brian Darling, Aaron Burchat, Miriam Mutton, and Randy Barber. Of those currently serving on council, only Burchat has officially filed nomination papers for a councillor seat so far.
Several first time candidates have also entered the councillor race. Randy Curtis and Alexander Cahill have both filed nomination papers, while Mark Mills publicly signalled his intention to run earlier this year through a press release issued in January.
Additional candidates are expected to enter the race over the coming months as the campaign season gradually ramps up.
Under Ontario’s Municipal Elections Act, nomination papers can be filed until August 21 at 2 p.m., with the certified list of candidates expected August 24.
Cobourg residents will head to the polls October 26 for the next municipal election, with advance voting expected earlier in the month.
The Town’s unofficial candidate list continues to be updated regularly through the Cobourg Votes website as nomination papers are submitted.
