What began as a family’s response to unimaginable loss has grown into a community movement focused on mental health awareness, suicide prevention and support for those navigating grief.
Tattoos for Trauma was founded by sisters Sue Glover and Theresa Rickerby following the death of Glover’s son and Rickerby’s nephew, David, who died by suicide in August 2020 after struggling with his mental health.
Since then, the organization has raised awareness about mental health challenges while creating opportunities for people to connect, share their stories and find support.
Rickerby says the organization’s broader goal is to raise awareness, build community, provide support and reduce stigma surrounding trauma, mental health and suicide.
This year, Tattoos for Trauma is launching two major fundraising initiatives, with proceeds supporting Northumberland Hills Hospital Community Mental Health Services.
The first is a tattoo fundraiser that began June 1 and runs through September 1.
David’s mother, Sue Glover says people are already sharing photos of their tattoos online.
Participating studios include:
Wildflower Artistry Tattoo, Cobourg
Wild Ink, Cobourg
Nick’s Tattoos, Port Hope
Stately Ravens Studio, Port Hope
Maneki Teki Tattoo, Port Hope
Studio 31 Tattoo, Brighton
No Love Lost Tattoos, Bowmanville
The second initiative is a new Walk to End Suicide scheduled for Saturday, September 12 at the Cobourg Yacht Club and waterfront.
Rickerby says the event at the Cobourg Yacht Club will feature food, music, art, community resources and a memorial display honouring loved ones lost to suicide, while remaining free and accessible to anyone looking for support.
