The Town of Cobourg is reminding residents that businesses conducting door-to-door sales must hold a valid municipal licence before operating within the community.
In a notice issued this week, the Town’s Legislative Services Division highlighted requirements under the Itinerant Vendor By-law, which governs the sale of goods and services at residences and other locations outside a permanent place of business.
The by-law applies to vendors selling products or services door-to-door, as well as those displaying samples of goods that may be delivered at a later date.
Municipal officials say residents who are approached by a door-to-door salesperson have the right to ask to see the vendor’s Itinerant Vendor Licence before engaging in any discussion or transaction.
Residents may also choose not to open the door, ask a salesperson to leave, or report suspected unlicensed activity to Municipal Law Enforcement.
The Town says a current list of licensed vendors is available online.
According to the municipality, there is presently one active itinerant vendor licence in Cobourg. The licence has been issued to YES Acquisitions Inc., which is conducting customer sign-ups for Cogeco services on the company’s behalf.
Town officials say the licensing requirement helps ensure accountability and provides residents with a way to verify whether a business is authorized to operate door-to-door.
Residents with concerns about unlicensed sales activity are encouraged to contact the Municipal Law Enforcement and Licensing Office and provide details about the company involved.
Additional information, including the current list of licensed vendors, is available through the Town of Cobourg website.
