The chair of the Cobourg Police Services Board says he remains committed to leading the board after addressing concerns about comments he made following the appointment of the town’s new police chief.
In a statement released after the board’s June 23 meeting, board chair Adam Bureau said concerns were raised regarding remarks he made after the selection of Chris Leather as chief of police. Specifically, Ron Kerr argued Bureau improperly revealed details from closed-session discussion on the hiring in a media interview.
According to Bureau, a concern was expressed that he had characterized the board’s decision as unanimous, despite the vote itself not being unanimous.
He added that it was never his intention to disclose confidential information or undermine the integrity of the chief recruitment process.
As for his reaction to a suggestion he step down, Bureau says he still has the support of the board.
The chair noted that selecting a chief of police is among the most significant responsibilities of a police service board and acknowledged that members may hold differing opinions throughout the process.
“While members may have differing views throughout the process, we share a common commitment to selecting the best leader for our police service and supporting that individual once a decision has been made,” he said.
Bureau also emphasized the importance of open discussion and accountability in board governance, saying members must be able to raise concerns and ask difficult questions.
He described the matter as having been discussed and resolved, adding that the board has now moved forward.
Looking ahead, Bureau said his focus remains on supporting Leather as he begins his tenure as chief of police, advancing the board’s priorities and ensuring adequate and effective policing for Cobourg residents.
