Cobourg Police are investigating after the Ecology Garden was damaged in what investigators are treating as a mischief incident.
Police say the damage occurred sometime between June 25 and the morning of June 26 at the Hibernia Street garden. Officers received the report on June 26.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Police say patrols have been increased in the area and are encouraging anyone with information, or who may have dashcam or security camera footage, to contact the Cobourg Police Service or Crime Stoppers.
On Friday, Mayor Lucas Cleveland issued a statement expressing disappointment over the vandalism, thanking Town of Cobourg staff for their response and expressing confidence that police and municipal bylaw officers will investigate the incident.
In his statement, the mayor also suggested he believes the vandalism may be connected to recent debate surrounding the town’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan and Council’s decision to remove proposed references related to harm reduction and public health.
However, Cobourg police have not identified a motive for the vandalism or indicated that investigators have linked the incident to any recent council decisions or public discussions.
Anyone with information, or who may have dashcam or security footage from the area between June 25 and June 26, is asked to contact the Cobourg Police Service at 905-372-6821 or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.
